Charlie Bartlett

Coming of age film about high school life is clearly influenced by Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. But while that film was light and funny, this comedy drama takes on teen suicide and drug abuse to make a film wildly uneven in tone.

Married Life

Stagy, low key, ensemble piece about a man who has an extramarital-affair. Set in America during the late 40s, the story vacillates between sophisticated comedy then heavy drama, but ultimately winds up being neither, just boring.

The Mist

Average B-movie horror film from a Stephen King novella complete with religious fanatics, stupid behavior, and the standard “twist” ending.

Persepolis

Dark, stylized, hypnotic cartoon recounts a young girl’s coming of age at the time of the Iranian revolution and beyond. Depressing film’s main character is difficult to like despite her tough life.

The Bucket List

Overlysimplified tale of 2 men living out their last days. Saccharine and formulaic story is enhanced by the personalities of Nicholson and Freeman.
