Eerie haunted house story follows a paranormal investigator who gathers three people to a large estate to study the supernatural. Understated, low key and elegant, this horror film is based on the novel “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson. Film remarkably builds tension without being explicit, but rather suggesting spooky events of a psychological nature. One of the true great horror films of the 60s has over time become the quintessential haunted house movie.

This is one of my favorite classic horror films, back when they understood what you don’t see is so much more affecting than what you do see. Most of my peers over the years who I’ve had watch it laughed at it, however. I think most modern audiences aren’t willing to let go of their jadedness to enjoy it. Which is why we got a remake, which was bloody awful.
You’re right on both counts. Modern audiences won’t find it scary and the remake, which was a special effects extravaganza, gave me a headache.
