Sherlock Holmes

PhotobucketPhotobucketThrilling re-invention of the titular detective, his partner Watson, and their attempt to stop Lord Blackwood from taking over the world with his apparent supernatural powers.  Irreverent update on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character is more high testosterone action hero, than the sophisticated intellectual from the books.  But it really doesn’t matter.  The script is so gripping, once the adventure starts, it never lets up.  Unquestionably, director Guy Ritchie’s best film.  The story is complemented by a terrific performance by Robert Downey Jr. and wonderful art direction which renders Victorian-era London in a stunningly grimy post industrial haze of blues and grays.  Also of note is the rousing score by master composer Hans Zimmer.  An entertaining and fun film.

    1. Originally, the trailer had me worried. But it actually included several scenes that do not even appear in the final film. Although this version will not please purists, I found its modern take fairly enjoyable.

  1. I don’t think this is Ritchie’s best film, but it was fun. I enjoy films such as LOCK STOCK and SNATCH, and hated hated hated REVOLVER and only kinda liked ROCKNROLLA…Never saw SWEPT AWAY (thankfully, as I understand it) but this was good, energetic fun

    1. Really? Haven’t seen the 2nd yet but I haven’t heard from anyone with that point of view. You’re the first person to tell me they prefered the sequel. Maybe I’ll have to give this second look.
