I thought Seth MacFarlane was a great host for the Oscars. His opening monologue was a bit long, but I really liked how he shook things up. That’s what a good host should do. Make something fresh and exciting. I know a lot of people got bent out of shape for the “We Saw Your Boobs” song, however the majority of the people who felt that way didn’t quite get that he was being satirical. He was actually criticizing Hollywood and the emphasis it places on women taking of their clothes. That was most obvious when he brought out the gay men’s chorus to sing about boobs.
I agree with you that there were equally strong performances in the male and female acting categories. I also was surprised Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor, since I was initially predicting Tommy Lee Jones would take it.
I was upset that Roger Deakins didn’t win Best Cinematography for Skyfall. Poor guy is 0/9 on his nominations. Life of Pi looked great but I also thought it was more about animation than cinematography per se. I fall into the camp of people as well who thought Brave didn’t deserve to win Best Animated Feature. Totally undeserving.
I wasn’t too surprised by Ang Lee winning for Best Director. Although I didn’t love Life of Pi I can at least respect its technical prowess.
Apparently some people thought MacFarlane bombed during the “We Saw Your Boobs” number since the actresses looked upset (i.e. Charlize Theron’s reaction). I guess they didn’t realize that was all pre-recorded mock outrage. I totally agree with your assessment. Plus he wasn’t even really doing anything but stating the obvious.
Roger Deakins is actually 0/10 now (The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, Kundun, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Man Who Wasn’t There, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, No Country for Old Men, The Reader, True Grit, Skyfall) He will win at some point. He’s too talented and the law of averages almost assures it.
I really loved Life of Pi. The animation vs. cinematography is a valid argument, but I still think Claudio Miranda was deserving. His work in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button wasn’t even nominated so you could think of this award as some retribution for that oversight.
