Online Film Critics Society Awards 2013

OFCS

2013 has been a very good year. I was inducted into the Online Film Critics Society back in August. The OFCS is the largest, most respected organization for movie critics whose work appears primarily on the Internet. It’s been one of the greatest things to happen to me as as a blogger and more importantly as a movie lover.

The 17th Annual OFCS Awards Winners were announced on December 16, 2013. I participated in the voting process and here are the results:

    Congrats on your induction. 2013 had a slew of good films, but not many great ones to me. For the most part 2013 was just very forgettable. We may be discussing these films now b/c they’re so fresh, but let a few years pass and I don’t think most of these titles will be very memorable.

    “Mud” for example just wasn’t that great. It was cool to watch once, but it certainly wasn’t anything grand. I liked “Man of Steel” but it was far from as strong as it could have been. I loved the first act of “The Place Beyond The Pines” but after Luke all of the characters simply fell flat in comparison; I was on such a high for the entire first act, and afterwards the intensity dropped and was never matched throughout the duration. “Gravity” was an epic movie experience on the IMAX screen in 3D – but it will not be nearly as good watching it at home. “Prisoners” was strong, but came a bit unraveled in the final act. I liked “The Conjuring” but was hoping for a stronger conclusion.

    There are a lot of movies I liked in 2013, but there’s always a “but” as to explain why it wasn’t great.

      I’m quite pleased with the way my Top 10 list for 2013 is shaping up. I thought it was a good year for film.

    For the record, possibly the only 2 winners on this list I agree with are Best Foreign Language Film and maybe Best Actress (though having seen AMERICAN HUSTLE a third time, I’m tempted to say it should’ve been Amy Adams)

      American Hustle, Blue Is the Warmest Color, Gravity, and Her were my favorites among these choices.

    Congratulations Mark on your acceptance into that august body the OFCS. It is quite an honor.

    I applled as well, but didn’t make the cut.

    I was pleased to see that Johnnie To’s Drug War got an honorable mention in the Foreign Film Category. You haven’t reviewed it yet, so please accept my recommendation to see it.

      Apparently Drug War came out July 2013 in the U.S. I must admit, the film wasn’t even on my radar. It was well represented in the OFCS nominations, so my curiosity is piqued.

    I don’t agree with all the choices, but I am happy with the following. Cate Blanchett for actress, “Her” for screenplay and BITWC for foreign film.

    Congrats on making it in to the OFCS. I’m thrilled for you. They’ve been a tough nut to crack for me. Even though I’m a member of another film critics group and have technically met their criteria on both occasions that I’ve applied, they’ve rejected me for what I consider to be bogus reasons.

    That drama aside, there’s a nice variety of movies represented in the nominations and wins here. I’m surprised that Gravity scored so high in many categories since reactions to it were pretty tempered in my group. Also, I don’t get all the praise for American Hustle. For me it was once of the most overrated movies of last year. I think The Wolf of Wall Street does a much better job with that particular style of storytelling.

      There seems to be an American Hustle vs. The Wolf of Wall Street debate going on. Personally I liked both but ‘Hustle’ moved at a faster clip than ‘Wolf’ which was at least 30 minutes too long.
