This documentary delves into the life of the singer following her 2022 revelation of being diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare and challenging neurological condition. While the chronicle primarily focuses on this disease, it also delivers a glimpse into her life and career accomplishments and features archival clips of her singing.
The account provides some biographical information, such as Celine’s background as the youngest of 14 children in a large family. It highlights a rise from humble beginnings in Charlemagne, Quebec, to worldwide superstardom, showcasing extraordinary vocal talents and dedication to craft. Despite these insights, the main emphasis is the battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome. As someone who has always appreciated Celine’s abilities as a singer, I was more interested in her musical achievements. I found the focus on struggles with SPS less engaging.
Although I sympathize with the impact muscle spasms have had on Celine’s ability to sing, it’s challenging to feel deeply sorry for her, given the immense success and wealth she has achieved. There’s a scene where she visits a warehouse to show off an enormous collection of costumes. In another, she goes to a closet filled with literally hundreds of shoes and can’t find a pair of flats. These moments stood out to me as particularly telling.
One of the more poignant aspects of the film is its portrayal of Celine’s perseverance and resilience. It briefly mentions her late husband and manager, René Angélil, whose passing in 2016 appears to have left a profound void. The documentary touches on her role as a mother to twin boys, Nelson and Eddy, 13. It captures the ongoing journey to balance a personal and professional life amidst health challenges.
One of the film’s strengths is its refusal to overly glorify the singer, as I had expected. Instead, it presents a somewhat somber and almost lonely portrait of her current reality. Fans of Celine Dion will likely deem this presentation fascinating, as it offers an intimate look at her vulnerability. However, it does assume a certain level of pre-existing admiration, so those without a knowledge of her career may long for more.
